Privacy

The short version

There are no accounts, no logins and no passwords on Chess Stats. Nothing is sold. What you type goes only where it must to answer you, as listed below.

What happens when you use each tab

  • US Chess tabs (Individual Stats, Compare Players, Find Tournaments, and US Chess lookups in the predictor): the name or US Chess ID you enter is sent to this site's ratings server, which fetches the public US Chess record. The server keeps a short-lived cache of the public records it fetched, so a repeat lookup is faster. It has no accounts and does not tie lookups to a person, though its host keeps ordinary request logs (see Hosting).
  • Chess.com and Lichess tabs: your browser asks Chess.com or Lichess directly for the username you type. Those requests do not pass through Chess Stats. No login to either site is ever asked for.
  • FIDE ratings: when you pick a player whose US Chess record has a FIDE ID, your browser asks Lichess's copy of FIDE's rating list for that ID. That request goes straight to Lichess, not through Chess Stats.
  • Entry lists (Austin Chess, Coppell Chess Club, OnlineRegistration.cc, Google Sheets): this site fetches the public list and passes on only name, US Chess ID, rating, section and requested byes. Schools, teams, grades, contact details and payment details are dropped on the server and never reach your browser.
  • Rating estimators: the arithmetic runs in your browser. What you enter is not sent anywhere.

Analytics

Chess Stats uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which tabs are used. It reports aggregate figures such as page views, the country and city a visit came from, and the kind of device. Google Analytics sets cookies to tell a returning visitor from a new one.

Advertising

Chess Stats may show ads from Google AdSense to cover running costs. Google and its partners may use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other sites. You can turn off personalised advertising in Google Ads Settings, and learn about opting out of other vendors' cookies at aboutads.info/choices.

Hosting

The site is served by Cloudflare, and the ratings server runs on Render. Like any web host, both see the address a request comes from in order to answer it, and keep standard request logs.

Children

Many tournament players are children, and their ratings appear in the public US Chess database that this site reads. Chess Stats shows only what that public record and public entry lists already show, never contact details or schools, and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Questions

Use the contact page. If you would like a correction, or have a concern about how a public record is shown here, say so there.
